Tomorrow will be a perceived day of reckoning for so many leaving cert students when the CAO offers come out. If your son or daughter is one of those young adults I am sure at this stage you are worried for them or maybe up the walls.

Our children at 17/ 18 don’t have the benefit of life experience so it is up to us to give them perspective should everything go wrong for them tomorrow. Having coached teenagers over the past couple of years on making college/career choices, the big benefit of looking at possibilities in advance is that you have the time and luxury to change should you so decide. Tomorrow is different, no more changes. You and/or your husband will take on the coach role big time over the next couple of days.

If the offer is what they want – great. If it is 3rd, 4th, 10th on their list maybe not so great. What can you say to them if it doesn’t go to plan…….well try if you can to be empathetic, non-judgemental and calm above all. Believe me when I say there are so many ways around what they want to do that really it is up to us to share with them the belief that all will be well – whatever the offer. If I can give any advice at all pick the 2nd, 5th, 10th option only if it makes sense in terms of your child’s interests and capabilities…..don’t accept a course for the sake of it.

So I wish you all well tomorrow in your coaching role. Feel free to mail me at edel@momcnet.com if any questions on options.
